How to be an effective leader

Leadership is not a solo sport

I’m going to share a story about how to be an effective leader and the importance of bringing your teams together to think through different ways of doing things to create better outcomes.

Harry Triguboff, founder of Metricon shares how and why it matters for him to have his team around him and how this has led to faster and better decision making.

He also talks about his pivot from an industry he trained in (textile engineering) to one he loved and where he saw opportunity (property). This is something many successful people have done and many others are doing now as they retrain to head in a different direction.

When what got you here, won’t get you there.

This means creating an environment where thinking differently is celebrated.

For leaders, it’s about finding ways to bring your people together to foster collaboration, social thinking, increased energy, faster outcomes, growth and the effective implementation of strategy.

This isn’t to say people shouldn’t work from home…

It’s to show you some ways you can put a rocket under the in-office days to make them dynamic, interesting, productive, rewarding and compelling.

Over to you, Harry.

Here’s what I like about this video:

  1. Harry talks about the importance of getting on with your people so you’re all successful together
  2. It’s important to build up a strong team and to build this strength to allow for succession and growth
  3. The team works very closely and talks all the time, together, bouncing ideas around dynamically and making fast decisions

Here’s how to be an effective leader by addressing this in your work to be more successful, to generate growth and speed up decision making.

  • Harness the power of diversity of thought, get your teams together and build those key relationships
  • Get rid of the random hot desk configurations where people are so far apart they might as well work from home
  • Give them a compelling reason to come in to the office – a million meetings is a deterrent
  • Encourage your people to have ideas and create opportunities to facilitate and activate them
  • Promote social thinking and solve problems together
  • Recognise the key people who need to be around other people to be more effective. This includes, marketing, leadership teams, operations, sales teams, as well as junior staff. It’s not going to be all the time. Many of these people need to be out in the market generating business, building relationships and getting things done, but you need to have frequent chunks of time where they can be together.

Here’s how you can start the process

Rather than arguing about what’s the right way, think what would happen if we explored more options?

Or, if we asked questions like:

  • How else could we tackle this challenge?
  • Who else is focused on this challenge?
  • What’s working/not working for them?

Or maybe even more importantly, if we started with this question:

“What are we really trying to create?”

Not fix. Create.

It’s a whole different mindset that opens the doors to even more AND better possibilities.

The little things add up.
